Would you give up a cruise to Mexico or a school trip to China… to play a hockey game? That is exactly what Derian Gaultier and Joel Cullen are doing next week. But it isn’t just any old hockey game…it is the Midget AAA Provincials and an opportunity like this doesn’t come around very often. In fact, the lone Midget AAA Provincial banner hanging in Twin Rink says “1994”, which is five years before the oldest player on the current team was born.

The Chilliwack Midget AAA Bruins had an uphill battle to get to this spot. After being placed in flight 2 for tiering the team went 6-1 in tiering and earned a spot in flight 1. Early in the season, they lost two key players to season ending injuries. The Final Four was played in Coquitlam last week Chilliwack defeated the T birds in game 1 and tied Cloverdale in game 2. All Chilliwack needed was a tie to advance to Provincials. The team battled hard against Coquitlam but lost. Our boys thought they were out. But, the tie against Cloverdale was their saving grace; Because Cloverdale also had a win and a loss, Chilliwack needed to win a “one-game playoff” on Wednesday in Surrey, to advance to the Provincials. They won 3-0!

For Dawson Campbell, Mitch Davis, Derian Gaultier, Jared Gibbard, Jett Higginbottom, Josh Irvine and Tycen Kingma, this is their final year of Minor Hockey, and their last chance to represent Chilliwack on the ice. As Gaultier says “The Mexican Riviera will always be there. I will never get this chance again.”

Younger players Joel Cullen, Matti Clark, Dylan Devers, Carson Ediger, Garret Lindhout, Brock Maccholz, Sean McCracken, Ethan Rideout, Riley Smith, Liam Warren and Dawson Wolff do have more time with Chilliwack Minor Hockey, but the special magic of this team is hard to come by. Coach Clayton Robinson says “The kids are a passionate group, their willingness to sacrifice individual accolade for the betterment of the team has been a direct reflection of our success.”

The entire team, along with Coach Robinson, assistant coaches Curtis Toop, Cam Campbell and trainer Scott Ediger, will be traveling up to Prince George March 19 – 24. Team manager Lisa Gibbard says the team is looking for sponsors to help with travel expenses. If you can help out, please contact Lisa Gibbard at 604-991-6987or make a donation to CMHA at the twin rinks office.
Chilliwack will be joined by Saanich, Coquitlam, Prince George, Thompson Zone, and Northeast Trackers at the provincial tournament in Prince George.
Keep your sticks crossed for Chilliwack’s AAA Midget Hockey Team and hope they bring home Provincial Gold!
